My Go-To Gluten-Free Orders at Chain Restaurants (When There’s Nothing Local)

Because sometimes you’re in an airport terminal or a highway exit with nothing but chain options, and a girl’s still gotta eat gluten-free.

When I travel, I love discovering unique, local spots, especially those that cater to gluten-free food enthusiasts. But let’s be real: sometimes, your only options are an airport food court, a highway rest stop, or a strip mall near your hotel.

That’s when the chain restaurants come in to save the day. Over the years, I’ve built a solid list of go-to orders at some of the most common chain restaurants, reliable meals that actually taste good, and don’t make me feel like I’m missing out. So, whether you’re celiac, gluten-intolerant, or just trying to cut it out where you can, here are my personal favorites, and a few travel tips to go with them.

Shake Shack

  • Order: Cheeseburger with a gluten-free bun, no fries, and a chocolate shake
  • Why I love it: Shake Shack’s gluten-free buns are surprisingly good and taste like “real” bread. While I skip the fries (shared fryer = gluten!), their chocolate shake is always a must.
  • Travel Note: ATL Airport always comes through with a Shake Shack, my go-to layover ritual.

Noodles & Company

  • Order: Gluten-free mac & cheese with steak
  • Why I love it: This is my comfort food. The sauce is creamy, the GF noodles hold up well, and the added steak gets me my protein.

Chick-fil-A

  • Order: Grilled nuggets, fries, and a LARGE Dr. Pepper
  • Why I love it: Their waffle fries are GF (hallelujah), and the grilled nuggets are flavorful and filling. The combo just works.
  • Note: Always check with your local location about cross-contamination; some are better than others with allergy protocols.

Chipotle

  • Order: Brown rice, chicken, queso, and chips
  • Why I love it: Most of Chipotle’s ingredients are gluten-free (just avoid the flour tortillas).
  • Fun Fact: I’m a cilantro-hater (aka, soap gene club), so brown rice is always my go-to.

Blaze Pizza

  • Order: GF crust with red sauce, sausage, mozzarella, garlic, and sea salt
  • Why I love it: They offer two kinds of gluten-free crusts, and the non-cauliflower one holds up better in my opinion. It’s customizable, quick, and doesn’t feel like a “sad” version of pizza.
  • Pro Tip: If you’re sensitive to cross-contamination, ask them to change gloves and use a clean pizza cutter!

Cava

  • Order: Rice + lettuce bowl with chicken or steak, cucumbers, and corn
  • Why I love it: Light, flavorful, and easy to customize. When I want something fresh but filling, Cava is an easy win.
  • Bonus: They label ingredients clearly, so GF options are easy to spot.

Olive Garden

  • Order: GF pasta with red meat sauce and a bowl of Zuppa Toscana
  • Why I love it: It’s a sit-down chain that actually has good gluten-free pasta. Their meat sauce is flavorful, and the soup is one of my favorites.
  • Truth Time: Breaking up with the breadsticks and Alfredo sauce was honestly the hardest part of going gluten-free. I’m still not over it.

Pizza Hut

  • Order: GF crust with sausage and pepperoni
  • Why I love it: Surprisingly delicious for a fast-food pizza place. The crust is crunchy with good flavor!
  • Heads Up: Not all locations carry GF crust, and sadly, the one near me recently stopped offering it. RIP.

Final Thoughts

Gluten-free doesn’t have to mean boring, especially when you know what to order. These chain restaurant staples have saved me more times than I can count, whether I’m stuck at an airport or just don’t have the time to find a local option.
