When the Missing Returns – The Reappearance of Rachel Price Review: My Thoughts on This Twist-Filled Mystery

Opening Thoughts

I picked this up after hearing rave reviews, and the concept instantly intrigued me. In most mystery and thriller novels, you’re trying to solve a murder or disappearance. But what happens when the missing person suddenly reappears? That twist alone made me want to know how author Holly Jackson would tell this story. Who would drive the investigation? What secrets would unravel? And, most importantly, could the truth live up to the mystery?

Spoiler-Free Thoughts

The Reappearance of Rachel Price is a gripping mystery/thriller that keeps you guessing at every turn. Just when you think you know what’s happening, a new clue or twist pulls the rug out from under you. I found myself forming theories only to have them completely flipped a few chapters later… in the best possible way.

That said, I did have slightly higher expectations going in. While the story delivers suspense, it took a bit of time to build momentum. Once it did, though, I was hooked. If you love slow-burn thrillers that blend family secrets, documentary storytelling, and unexpected revelations, this one is worth the read.

What I Loved

  • Rachel Price’s reveal and motives: The biggest question throughout the book was why Rachel disappeared, and her return didn’t disappoint. I loved that her intentions were rooted in protection, not manipulation. She cared for both her daughters and wanted to keep them safe, even if her choices were complex.
  • The grandfather’s involvement: I suspected his dementia would be relevant, but I never expected him to be directly tied to Rachel’s disappearance. That reveal was shocking in the best way. I audibly gasped when I read that reveal.
  • The documentary crew’s integrity: Instead of exploiting the family’s tragedy for fame or money, they respected the family’s privacy. It was refreshing to see them written with empathy instead of greed.
  • The father’s character: From the beginning, readers are told he’s the main suspect, yet his kind nature makes you want to believe his innocence. The entire book plays this mental tug-of-war perfectly, keeping you uncertain until the end.

What Didn’t Work for Me

  • The slow start: The first half dragged a little for me. I kept waiting for a major reveal or turning point that didn’t come until the last quarter of the book. Once it did, though, I couldn’t put it down.
  • Jeff and his family’s storyline: Their involvement had so much potential but felt underdeveloped. The reveal about Rachel’s daughter being raised as their own was a huge twist, but it happened so late that it lacked emotional impact. I would’ve loved more exploration into their side of the story.
  • The ending felt abrupt: I appreciated how the plot wrapped up, but I wanted more resolution. A few extra chapters to process everything that happened and how the family would move forward.

Favorite Quote

“Some hurts were good: friends grew apart, people moved away, they left. It didn’t have to last forever to count. Things ended, this was ending, but that didn’t mean it never mattered.”
